ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2018) – Despite a game-high four shots on goal from junior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the No. 7 Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (10-2-1, 5-1-1 ECC) see their ten-game unbeaten streak come to an end and suffer their first ECC loss of the season, while the Redhawks (5-7-2, 3-4 ECC) have won two games in a row.
Seara had five shots on the night and freshman Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) had three shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to take the loss.
Roberts Wesleyan received a goal from Justine Sharda and an assist from Israela Groves. Kelsey Brinkel made 11 saves to earn the win.
The opening half saw few scoring chances for either side with both teams recording just one shot. Senior Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) recorded the lone shot on goal of the half in the 35th minute, but Brinkel made a stop to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The Mavericks dominated the second half, holding an 18-3 edge in shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. Brinkel made four saves in a five-minute span from the 51st minute to the 56th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Seara forced Brinkel to make another save in the 67th minute. The Redhawks broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Groves fired a free kick that was stopped by Torres and following a rebound Sharda would put the ball into the net to get Roberts Wesleyan on the board.
Mercy followed with a corner kick in the 72nd minute, but another Seara shot would be stopped by Brinkel. Brinkel would make four more saves, including one with 21 seconds left, which kept the Mavericks off the board and gave the Redhawks the victory.
Mercy held a 19-4 edge in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
