Vazquez Finishes With Double-Double as Volleyball Hosts LIU Post

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2018) – Despite a double-double from sophomore Leilani Vazquez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Adelphi University), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 15-25) decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (12-15, 6-6 ECC) see their three-match winning streak come to an end and fall a game behind Bridgeport for the fourth and final ECC Tournament spot. The Pioneers (18-11, 8-4 ECC) have won three matches in a row.

Vazquez had a match-high 13 kills and 14 digs and senior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 20 assists and had five digs. Senior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) contributed a match-high-tying 14 digs and senior Kaitlyn Partridge (Corona, Calif./Mt. San Antonio College) had eight kills.

LIU Post was led by Rachel Londot who had a team-high 11 kills.

The Pioneers scored the first two points of set one and later held a 15-10 lead, forcing a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks cut the deficit to 15-11 after a Vazquez kill, but the Pioneers would end the set on a 10-5 run to take the set, 25-16.

Mercy took a 7-4 lead in set two and held a 12-9 lead after a Sarah Watson (Maple Creek, Saskatchewan/Maple Creek) kill. However, LIU Post responded with an 11-0 run to take a 20-12 lead and held on for the 25-18 win to take a 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 4-2 lead in set three, but the visitors came back on a 10-4 run to build a 12-8 lead. Mercy cut the lead to 15-13 after a Vazquez kill, but LIU Post ended the set and match on a 10-2 run to earn the win.

Mercy hit .091 with 30 kills and 51 digs and LIU Post hit .321 with 42 kills and 52 digs.

Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 1st when they host Georgian Court for Senior Night at 6 p.m.
