Four Different Mavericks Score at Molloy to Lead No. 25 Men's Soccer to Best Start Since 1989

ROCKVILLE, CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2018) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring, the No. 25 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field.

The Mavericks (7-1-1, 4-1 ECC) have won three games in a row and are off to their best nine-game start since 1989, while the Lions (2-10, 0-5 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.

Juniors Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio del Verbo), Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and Kevin Rodriguez (Queens, N.Y./ASA College) and freshman Diego Arosemena (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Nuevo Ecuador) scored and seniors Chris Valverde (New York, N.Y./ASA College) and Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College) and junior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) dished out assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made one save to earn the win.

Molloy received a goal from Nikola Aleksic and Raul Bonilla made six saves to take the loss.

The Lions started the scoring in the 17th minute when Aleksic scored on a header following a corner to give Molloy a 1-0 lead. Mercy answered just over two minutes later when Achondo scored on a penalty kick after a yellow card by the Molloy goalkeeper.

It remained 1-1 for the remainder of the half, despite a Molloy shot hitting the crossbar in the final moments of the half.

The second half saw Molloy record two early shots, but Rebolledo-Camus gave Mercy the lead for good in the 57th minute when he scored following a cross from Valverde that made it 2-1.

The Mavericks continued to dominate the action and Rodriguez found the back of the net in the 63rd minute when he put away a loose ball in the box to make it 3-1.

Arosemena brought the score to 4-1 in the 74th minute when he headed a ball into the net after a pair of passes from Alvarez and Mangada. Mercy would not allow a shot on goal the rest of the way in securing the win.

Mercy held a 19-7 edge in shots and corner kicks were tied at 6-6.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, October 11th when they play at Holy Family at 3:30 p.m.
