ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2018) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 31st minute from junior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), off an assist from senior RaeAnn Ioannou (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge), the No. 11 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (9-1, 5-0 ECC) have won eight games in a row, while the Lions (3-6-1, 1-4 ECC) have dropped two games in a row.
Seara recorded her second goal of the season and Ioannou picked up her second assist of the year. Sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to pick up the shutout win.
Molloy was led by Daria Castrogivanni who fired a shot on goal and Jackie Carty made four saves to take the loss.
The Lions recorded their lone shot on goal of the game in the 15th minute, but Torres came up with the stop to keep the game scoreless. Senior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) responded with the Mavericks first shot on goal in the 24th minute, but Carty was up to the challenge and the game remained 0-0.
Seara gave Mercy the lead in the 31st minute when Ioannou fed Seara a pass in the box and the junior fired the ball into the back of the net to put the Mavericks up 1-0. Neither team would record a shot during the remainder of the half, giving Mercy a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Mavericks force Carty to make three more saves, but were unable to find the back of the net again. The Mercy backline did not allow a shot on goal in the second half, leading the Mavericks to their eighth straight win.
Mercy held an 11-4 edge in shots and Molloy held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 10th when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
