NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 10, 2018) - Powered by the game-winning goal in the 3rd minute of action from senior Rebecca Conway (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the No. 7 Mercy College women's soccer team extended their win streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (10-1) start 10-1 for the second straight year, while the Owls (8-5) have dropped two games in a row.
Conway recorded her first collegiate goal and sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made four saves to earn the win.
Southern Connecticut received a team-high two shots from Marisa Grisell and Mikaela Magee. Tamra Zippin played the first half in goal and made two saves to take the loss. Allie Smith played the second in net and made two saves.
Mercy got on the board quickly with Conway finding the back of the net just over two minutes into the game. The senior scored after a cross was punched to the 18 yard box following a Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) corner kick and fell to Conway who fired the shot on the ground to the bottom right to make it 1-0.
Both goalies would make two saves in the rest of the first half to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half saw the Mavericks record two more shots on goal, but Smith made two saves to keep the game at 1-0. Torres made a final save in the 89th minute to keep the Owls off the board and give Mercy the win.
Mercy held a 12-10 edge in shots and a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 13th when they host LIU Post at 12 p.m.
