DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2018) – Powered by six saves from sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the No. 7 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 0-0 double-overtime draw against ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-1-1, 5-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play and are 9-0-1 in their last ten games, while the Pioneers (8-2-3, 4-1-2 ECC) earn their second straight ECC tie.
Torres posted her sixth shutout of the year and seniors RaeAnn Ioannou (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) and Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) recorded a team-high two shots on goal.
LIU Post was led by Julia Duffy who had a game-high three shots on goal and Hillevi Eklow made eight saves to post a shutout.
Ioannou recorded the first shot on goal of the contest in the 19th minute, but Eklow came up with the stop to keep the game at 0-0. Eklow made another stop on a Noble shot and a Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) shot in the 27th and 31st minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Eklow made her final save of the first half in the 38th minute on a Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) shot. The Pioneers finally recorded their first shot on goal of the contest with ten seconds left in the half, but Torres made her first stop of the day to send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
Freshman Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) forced Eklow to make a stop in the 49th minute and Duffy responded with her second shot on goal of the game in the 59th minute. Noble had another scoring chance in the 61st minute with a header, but Eklow made the stop to keep the game scoreless. Torres would make two more saves and Eklow stopped two shots of her own to send the game into overtime after 90 minutes of scoreless action.
LIU Post had three scoring chances in the first overtime, but Torres made two saves and a shot went high to keep the game scoreless, leading to a second overtime.
The second overtime saw Noble with another scoring opportunity but her shot would go high in the 109th minute and neither team would be able to score before time ran out.
Mercy held an 18-13 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 17th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
