SEAFORD, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 25th minute from junior Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), the No. 2 seeded Mercy College field hockey team won its first ECC Field Hockey Championship with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 seeded Molloy College on Friday afternoon at Cedar Creek Park.
The Mavericks (6-12) end their season with two straight wins and win the season series against the Lions (12-6).
Podskoch recorded her first career goal and senior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and sophomore Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) recorded shots on goal. Senior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the first half in goal and made one save to earn the win. Senior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played the second half in goal and made four saves to finish off the win.
Molloy was led by Kyra Dalli who had a game-high two shots on goal. Tara Byrnes made two saves to take the loss.
In a contest that featured limited scoring chances, the Mavericks recorded two shots on goal in the 25th minute, but Byrnes made two saves to keep the game scoreless. However, Podskoch would find the back of the cage seconds later on a penalty stroke shot to the upper right corner that made it 1-0.
Amell made a save in the 29th minute to keep the score 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half saw the Lions hold a 9-2 edge in shots, but Pettit made four saves to keep Molloy off the board giving Mercy the ECC Championship win.
Molloy held an 11-6 edge in shots and an 11-7 edge in penalty corners.
