Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts Pace in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2018) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 70-55 setback to Pace University on Sunday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (1-4) fail to build off their win last time out, while the Setters (4-2) have won three games in a row.

Senior Sal Barbetto (New City, N.Y./Rockland CC) scored a team-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and redshirt sophomore Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Matthew Alectus (Hollywood, Fla./Hallandale) produced 11 points and graduate student Tawayne Anderson Jr. (Freeport, N.Y./Merrimack College) recorded ten points and six rebounds.

Pace was led by Peyton Wejnert who had a game-high 19 points.

Mercy opened the contest with a 10-6 lead following an Anderson jumper at the 14:56 mark of the first half and held a 13-10 lead after a Griffin three-pointer with 12:27 left. The Setters answered back with a 7-0 run to build a 17-13 advantage with 10:57 on the clock.

The Mavericks cut the deficit to two, 17-15, on an Amir Atkins (Alexandria, Va./Hagerstown CC) layup with 9:54 remaining in the half. Pace followed with a 17-0 run over five minutes to build their largest lead of the game, 34-15, with 4:30 left before halftime. Mercy made it a 14-point game, 38-24, heading into halftime.

The Mavericks started the second half by cutting the Pace lead to ten, 43-33, with 15:47 remaining. The Setters increased their lead to 14, 47-33, before Mercy responded with a 10-3 run, capped off by an Atkins three, that made it 50-43 with 7:27 left in the contest. A Griffin jumper with 6:45 on the clock made it 52-45, but Pace came right back with an 11-0 run to put the lead back to 18, 63-45, with four minutes left. Mercy could not get any closer than 15 points the rest of the way and the Setters came away with the win.

Mercy shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from downtown and 70.0 percent (7-of-10) from the foul line. Pace shot 50.0 percent (27-of-54) from the field, 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the charity stripe. Pace held a 39-23 edge on the boards and a 48-20 advantage in points in the paint. Mercy forced 24 Pace turnovers to hold a 26-19 edge in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, November 28th when they play at Nyack at 7 p.m.
