Vazquez Records Double-Double as Volleyball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan in Season Finale

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2018) – Despite a double-double from sophomore Leilani Vazquez (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Adelphi University), the Mercy College volleyball team concluded its 2018 season with a 3-1 (25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25) setback to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (14-17, 6-8 ECC) end the season with their most overall wins and ECC wins since 2005, while the Redhawks (5-18, 4-10 ECC) end their season with wins in two of their last three matches.

Vazquez recorded ten kills and a match-high 15 digs. Freshman Loreto Nunez Casal (Pontevedra, Spain/Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) had a match-high 14 kills along with seven digs. Senior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 40 assists with nine digs and senior Kaitlyn Partridge (Corona, Calif./Mt. San Antonio College) had ten kills. Senior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) produced 14 digs and sophomore Natalia Garcia netted 12 digs.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Rachel Holmes and Grace Detwiler who both recorded a team-high-tying 13 kills.

Mercy took an 11-8 lead in set one and later held a 20-15 edge after a Partridge kill. The Redhawks responded with a 9-4 run to tie the set up at 24-24. The Mavericks regained the lead at 25-24 after a service error, but Roberts Wesleyan came back with three straight points to take the first set, 27-25.

The Mavericks held an 11-6 advantage in set two, but the guests would ensue with a 17-9 run to take a 23-20 lead, forcing a Mercy timeout. Out of the timeout, Roberts Wesleyan scored two of the final three points to earn a 25-21 set two win.

Mercy opened the third set with four straight points, leading to a Redhawk timeout. Mercy later increased the lead to 16-9 on a Nunez Casal block and led 20-16 later in the set. The visitors made it 22-20, but the Mavericks ended the set with three straight points to take the third set, 25-20.

The Mavericks held an 11-7 lead in set four, leading to a Roberts Wesleyan timeout. Following the timeout, the Redhawks went on a 12-4 run to take a 19-15 lead, forcing a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks battled back and cut the deficit to one, 24-23, after a Partridge block. However, a kill from Detwiler ended the set and the match.

Mercy hit .197 with 51 kills and 66 digs and Roberts Wesleyan hit .271 with 59 kills and 71 digs.
