Brown Pours in Career-High 34 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Dominican

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2018) – Despite a career-high 34 points from sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) on 13-of-18 shooting, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 74-70 decision to Dominican College on Saturday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (3-7) have dropped four games in a row, while the Chargers (4-5) have won three games in a row.

Brown added a team-high eight rebounds and had three steals. Freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) contributed ten points and seven rebounds and sophomore Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) finished with ten points, six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) concluded the game with seven points and seven rebounds.

Dominican was led by Samantha McClutchy who recorded a double-double with 20 points and ten rebounds.

The Chargers opened the game on an 8-0 run, leading to a Mercy timeout. Following the timeout, the Mavericks answered with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 9-8 lead after a Lake layup with 4:27 left in the first quarter. Dominican came back with a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 14-9 with 2:50 left in the quarter. Mercy fought back and retook the lead at 16-14 following an Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) layup, but a three-pointer from Kyla Ramseur gave Dominican a 17-16 lead after one quarter of play.

Mercy started the second quarter with four straight points to build a 20-17 advantage with 7:23 left before halftime. The Chargers then went on a 10-3 run to hold a 27-23 lead with 4:13 remaining in the half. The Mavericks slowly clawed their way back into the game tying the game at 31-31 with 36 seconds left in the period after two Brown free throws. A layup from Korina Guerra right before halftime gave Dominican a 33-31 lead at the break.

The Chargers began the third quarter on a 10-5 run to increase their lead to seven, 43-36, with 5:44 on the clock. Dominican later put the lead to eight, 47-39, at the 3:32 mark before the Mavericks rallied with seven consecutive points to make it a one-point game, 47-46, with 1:43 remaining in the quarter. The Chargers took a five-point lead after four straight points before Brown drained two free throws to send Mercy into the fourth quarter down, 51-48.

Dominican went on a 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter, building their lead to double-digits, 60-50, with 6:33 left to play. The Chargers held a 64-56 lead with 3:47 remaining, but the Mavericks battled back and went on an 11-5 run to make it a two-point game, 69-67, with 35 seconds left after a Bender layup. However, Dominican would close the game out with three of the final four points in the contest to secure the win.

Mercy shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from downtown and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the foul line. Dominican shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, December 19th when they play at Molloy at 5 p.m.
