Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Dec. 19, 2018) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered a 60-55 setback to ECC foe Molloy College on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks (3-8, 0-4 ECC) have dropped five games in a row, while the Lions (6-5, 1-3 ECC) pick up their first ECC win of the year.

Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) led Mercy with a game-high 16 points and had eight rebounds. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) poured in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) added 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) netted ten points and seven rebounds.

Molloy was led by Jenna Silletti who had a team-high 14 points.

The Mavericks opened the contest on a 5-0 run and held a 15-6 lead with 5:55 left in the opening quarter after a Brown three-pointer. The Lions responded with an 11-0 run to take a 17-15 lead with 1:54 remaining in the period. Mercy closed out the period with four straight points from Hall to take a 19-17 lead after one quarter of play.

Molloy started the second quarter on a 12-2 run to retake the lead and built it to eight, 29-21, with two minutes remaining in the half. A Perez three made it a five-point game, but the hosts scored four of the final five points to increase the lead back to eight, 33-25, at halftime.

The Lions increased the lead to 12, 39-27, following a 6-2 run to start the third quarter. Molloy held an 11-point lead, 41-30, with 5:46 left in the frame and looked to be pulling away. However, the Mavericks continued to battle and responded with an 11-2 run, capped off by a Brown trifecta, that got Mercy within two, 43-41. The Lions quickly answered with five straight points to build the lead back to seven, 48-41, but the Mavericks ended the quarter with three consecutive points to head into the fourth quarter down, 48-44.

Mercy carried over the momentum from the end of the third quarter and started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 51-48 lead with 7:23 remaining. Molloy made it a 51-50 game with 5:35 left before Bender and Brown answered back with buckets to give Mercy a five-point lead, 55-50, with three minutes on the clock. The Lions clamped down on defense and held the Mavericks scoreless for the remainder of the game and ended the game on a 10-0 run to secure the win.

Mercy shot 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from downtown and 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the foul line. Molloy shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 47-39 edge on the glass and a 40-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, December 29th when they host Southern New Hampshire at 1:30 p.m.
