Scorcia Records Game-High Six Points as No. 16/18 Men's Lacrosse Earns 15-4 Win Over Georgian Court

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2018) – Powered by a career-high four goals and two assists from freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 16/18 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned an impressive 15-4 win over Georgian Court University in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-1) improve to .500 on the year, while the Lions (0-1) drop their season opener.

Scorcia added a ground ball and had seven shots on goal. Junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had four goals and three ground balls and sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) contributed three goals and an assist. Senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) netted two goals and an assist and juniors Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) and Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out two assists and sophomore Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) added an assist. Junior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) posted an assist, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) played the first 41:35 in goal with nine saves to earn the win.

Georgian Court was led by Michael Saladino who had a team-high two goals. Austin Geissel played the first 45 minutes in goal and made 13 saves to take the loss.

Mercy got off to a strong start in the home opener as Chillianis scored the game's first two goals to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead with 8:31 remaining in the opening quarter. MacSpadyen closed the scoring in the first quarter, off an assist from McPartland, that gave Mercy a 3-0 lead after one quarter.

The Mavericks continued to dominate in the second quarter, scoring the quarter's first four goals to increase their lead to 7-0 with 7:25 left in the half. McPartland opened the scoring in the frame with his first of the season following a pass from MacSpadyen. McDonough got into the goal column a minute later and Scorcia netted his first goal of the game just under a minute after McDonough's goal. Chillianis netted his third goal of the game to end the scoring run, giving Mercy a commanding 7-0 lead.  

Georgian Court finally got on the board with 5:02 left in the half when Saladino recorded a man-up goal. However, McPartland gave Mercy a man-up goal of their own just under a minute later to put the Mavericks ahead 8-1. Chillianis would get on the board for the fourth time in the half with just one second on the clock to give Mercy a 9-1 lead at halftime.

The second half saw the Mavericks score the first two goals of the third quarter as McPartland and Scorcia scored again to make it 11-1. Saladino netted his second goal of the game to cut the Mercy lead to 11-2 after three quarters.

The Mavericks continued to play well in the fourth quarter as Scorcia, Marzocca and McDonough scored to put Mercy ahead 14-2 with 7:16 remaining. The Lions scored two unanswered goals to make it 14-4, but Scorcia would cap the scoring off with his fourth goal of the day with 2:24 left to finish off the win for Mercy.

Mercy held a 41-22 edge in shots, a 38-26 edge in ground balls and went 18-of-21 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 24th when they play at Post University at 12 p.m.
