Brown Scores Team-High 18 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Queens

NYACK, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2018) – Despite a team-high 18 points from freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 66-58 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday night at Bowman Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (8-19, 3-14 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Knights (12-13, 8-9 ECC) secure a spot in the ECC Tournament with the win.

Brown added seven rebounds and went 8-of-17 from the floor. Junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) contributed 12 points and senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) ended the night with seven points and 11 rebounds.

Queens was led by Beth Bonin who had a game-high 24 points.

The Knights jumped out to an early 9-4 lead with 6:38 left in the opening quarter. Mercy answered with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Perez three, to take an 11-9 lead. Queens retook the lead at 15-13 on a Bonin three, but the Mavericks ensued with another 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the quarter, 20-15. The Knights cut the deficit to two, 20-18, heading into the second quarter.

Mercy continued to play well to start the second quarter, opening the frame on an 8-3 run to take a 28-21 lead with 5:19 remaining in the half. The Mavericks increased the lead to a game-high nine, 33-24, at the 2:28 mark following a Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) layup. Mercy led the rest of the quarter and headed into halftime with a five-point lead, 38-33.

A layup from Perez at the 7:25 mark of the third quarter increased the Mavericks lead back to seven, 44-37. The Knights rallied back with a 13-0 run to take a 50-44 lead with 3:42 remaining in the quarter. Queens held the lead the rest of the period and headed into the fourth quarter up, 52-48.

The Knights opened the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 59-50, with 6:49 left to play. The Mavericks cut the deficit to four, 62-58, with 41 seconds left but could not get any closer as Queens escaped with the win.

Mercy shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from downtown and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the foul line. Queens shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks conclude their season on Saturday, February 24th at Molloy at 2 p.m.
