ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2018) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team concluded their 2017-18 season with a 56-41 loss to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (8-20, 3-15 ECC) drop their second straight game and end the season with twice as many wins as last year, while the Lions (9-19, 4-14 ECC) snap a ten-game losing streak with the win.
Mercy was led by freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) who had 12 points and seven rebounds, while senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) ended her career with 12 points. Freshman Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Molloy was led by Marthe Guirand who had a game-high 20 points and 20 rebounds.
The Lions opened the contest with the game's first 14 points to take a 14-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter. Zaborowska got the Mavericks on the board with a four-point play to make it 14-4. Molloy would end the quarter on an 11-2 run to build a 25-6 lead after one period of play.
A Kathryn Gibson three-pointer to begin the second quarter gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 28-6. Molloy held a 30-10 advantage with 5:26 left in the half before Mercy closed the half on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits, 30-21, at halftime.
The Lions began the third quarter on an 8-4 run to build a 13-point lead, 38-25, with 5:28 remaining in the stanza. Molloy held a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter and headed into the fourth quarter up 41-30.
Mercy cut the deficit to nine on two occasions in the fourth quarter but could not get closer as the Lions held on for the victory.
Mercy shot 23.0 percent (14-of-61) from the floor, 13.9 percent (5-of-36) from downtown and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the foul line. Molloy shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from beyond the arc and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the charity stripe.
