Sanders Scores Team-High Nine Points as Women's Basketball Plays at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2018) – Despite a team-high nine points from sophomore Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 78-40 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Center.

The Mavericks (6-16, 2-11 ECC) have dropped six games in a row, while the Pioneers (16-6, 11-1 ECC) have won two games in a row.

Sanders added five rebounds and went 4-of-8 from the floor. Freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) and junior Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) netted six points and senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) chipped in five points and a game-high ten rebounds.

LIU Post was led by Shannon Doyle and Kylie Garrett who had a game-high 13 points apiece.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead at the 6:00 mark of the first quarter. Sanders got Mercy on the board with 5:04 remaining in the opening quarter. The hosts then followed with a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 18-2 with 2:32 left in the frame. Six straight points from the Mavericks brought the deficit to ten, 18-8, but a three-pointer by Garrett right before the buzzer gave LIU Post a 21-8 lead after one quarter.

LIU Post began the second quarter on an 11-0 run to build a 24-point advantage, 32-8, with 6:42 remaining in the half. Mercy later cut the deficit to 15, 34-19, but ended up heading into halftime down 19, 39-20.

The Pioneers outscored the Mavericks 29-9 in the third quarter to take a 68-29 lead after three quarters of play. Mercy went on to outscore the hosts 11-10 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough as LIU Post came away with the victory.

Mercy shot 26.3 percent (15-of-57) from the floor, 20.0 percent (5-of-25) from downtown and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the foul line. LIU Post shot 35.1 percent (26-of-74) from the field, 16.1 percent (5-of-31) from long distance and 80.8 percent (21-of-26) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 7th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at Nyack College at 5:30 p.m.
