MacSpadyen and Scorcia Record Game-High Six Points as No. 15/17 Men's Lacrosse Earns 16-8 Win Over No. 19 Southern N.H.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Mar. 10, 2018) – Powered by a game-high six points from junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) and freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 15/17 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 16-8 victory over No. 19 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Penmen Stadium.

The Mavericks (5-1) have won five games in a row, while the Penmen (2-1) drop their first game of the season.

MacSpadyen and Scorcia both recorded four goals and two assists and senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) had two goals, three assists and three ground balls. Junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also added four goals. Sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored a goal and added two assists and senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) also scored. Junior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out two assists and freshman Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) also had an assist. Junior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) had a game-high three caused turnovers and junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a game-high four ground balls. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 16 saves to earn the win.

The Penmen were led by Mark Beirne and Tom Schutz had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Michael Brawley played the first half in goal and made five saves to take the loss.

Martinez opened the scoring with a goal at the 13:41 mark to put Mercy ahead 1-0. Southern N.H. answered with a goal of their own just under a minute later to make it a 1-1 contest. MacSpadyen gave the lead back to the Mavericks at the 11:47 mark. The Penmen answered with two straight goals to build a 3-2 advantage. MacSpadyen concluded the first quarter with a man-up goal to tie the game up at 3-3 after one quarter.

The Mavericks went on to begin the second quarter with three consecutive goals to take a 6-3 lead at the 10:27 mark. Scorcia scored twice and MacSpadyen netted his third goal of the game to give Mercy the lead for good. Schutz scored for Southern N.H. to bring the score to 6-4 before Chillianis and Scorcia ended the half with goals to put Mercy ahead 8-4 at halftime.

Martinez and Chillianis started the third quarter with goals to increase the Mavericks lead to 10-4 with 12:52 left in the third quarter. Beirne made it 10-5 just under a minute later, but Mercy came back with four straight goals to build a 14-5 advantage with 6:13 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded goals to conclude the quarter giving Mercy a 15-6 lead after three quarters.

The Penmen outscored the Mavericks 2-1 in the fourth quarter but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Mercy came away with the win.

Mercy held a 41-37 edge in shots, a 28-19 advantage in ground balls and went 17-of-28 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 20th when they play at American International College at 3 p.m.
