SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 20, 2018) – Powered by a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists from sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 13/17 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 20-7 victory over American International College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-1) have won six games in a row, while the Yellow Jackets (1-6) have dropped five games in a row.
Mercy was also led by junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) who had three goals and two assists and junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) added two goals and two assists. Freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) contributed three goals and an assist and seniors Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) and Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and junior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) each scored twice. Junior Matthew DeFeo (Upper Brookville, N.Y./St. Dominic's) and freshman Austin Burns (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) also scored and junior Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), sophomore Ricky Marchelos (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Herricks) and freshman Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) dished out an assist each. Sophomore Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 10-of-10 on face-offs and had six ground balls. Sehring went 14-of-19 on face-offs and had a game-high eight ground balls. Freshman John Collins (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scooped up five ground balls and added a caused turnover and junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) played the first half in goal with three saves to earn the win.
American International was led by Matt Deloria who had a team-high three goals. Jacob Ortiz made 13 saves in goal in taking the loss.
Mercy opened the contest with the game's first six goals to take a 6-0 lead with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter and did not look back in securing the win. Martinez, MacSpadyen and Marzocca netted their first goals of the game to put the Mavericks up 3-0 with 9:13 on the clock. Chillianis then put in two straight goals and Martinez netted his second to give Mercy a 6-0 advantage. The Yellow Jackets got on the board at the 1:16 mark, but McPartland answered with his first goal of the game with 21 seconds left to give Mercy a 7-1 lead after one quarter.
MacSpadyen opened the scoring in the second quarter at the 12:52 mark to extend the Mavericks lead to 8-1. Deloria netted a man-up goal to make it 8-2 before Scorcia and McPartland responded back with goals to bring the score to 10-2 with 6:11 remaining in the half. Following another AIC man-up goal, MacSpadyen and McPartland ended the half with goals to send Mercy into halftime with a 12-3 lead.
The Mavericks began the third quarter with three straight goals to build a 15-3 lead as McPartland scored once and Scorcia found the back of the net twice. After a Yellow Jacket goal made it 15-4, McDonough and DeFeo tallied goals to give Mercy a 17-4 edge before Deloria scored to send the Mavericks into the fourth quarter with a 17-5 lead.
Mercy outscored the hosts 3-2 in the fourth quarter with McDonough, Burns and Marzocca scoring to finish off the victory.
Mercy held a 44-21 edge in shots, a 40-15 advantage in ground balls and went 25-of-31 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 24th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan in their ECC opener at 12 p.m.
