ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2018) – Powered by a team-high five points from junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), the No. 13/17 Mercy College men's lacrosse team opened ECC play with a 12-6 win over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (7-1, 1-0 ECC) have now won seven games in a row which ties a school record set last season. The 7-1 start also ties a program best start set in 2011, 2013 and 2015. The Redhawks (4-6, 0-2 ECC) have now dropped four games in a row.
Chillianis posted four goals, an assist and two ground balls and senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) added four goals. Junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) recorded two goals and two ground balls and junior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) finished with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) netted two assists and freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) produced a goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 10-of-22 on face-offs. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 12 saves and had a game-high-tying six ground balls to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Hunter Lemieux who had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Brennan Mackey played the full 60 minutes in goal with 12 saves to take the loss.
The Redhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after an Alex Bianchi goal at the 11:51 mark of the first quarter. However, the Mavericks closed out the first quarter with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead after one quarter. Chillianis scored twice and MacSpadyen tallied his first goal of the game to put Mercy ahead for good.
Martinez began the second quarter with two straight goals to give the Mavericks a 5-1 lead less than two minutes into the frame. Marzocca scored at the 9:41 mark to make it 6-1 before Bianchi ended the 6-0 run with a goal at the 5:54 mark to bring the score to 6-2. Scorcia sent Mercy into halftime with a 7-2 lead with his goal with 2:23 left in the half.
Roberts Wesleyan opened the third quarter with three straight goals to get within two, 7-5, with 4:52 left in the period. Martinez produced his third goal of the game with just 28 seconds left in the quarter to give Mercy an 8-5 lead heading to the final quarter.
The Mavericks started the fourth quarter with four straight goals to build a 12-5 advantage and did not look back in securing the win. Chillianis scored twice in the quarter and Martinez and MacSpadyen added their final goals of the game to help put away the Redhawks.
Mercy held a 33-26 edge in shots, a 36-32 advantage in ground balls and went 10-of-22 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 27th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m.
