DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2018) – Led by a career-high six goals from freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 13/18 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 13-6 win over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-1, 2-0 ECC) have now won a school-record eight games in a row and remain unbeaten in ECC play, while the Spartans (3-4, 0-1 ECC) drop their first ECC game of the year.
Scorcia added an assist and two ground balls and junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) contributed four goals and two assists. Sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished with two goals and three assists and senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out a game-high four assists. Junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) scored a goal and junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a game-high six caused turnovers along with four ground balls. Sophomore Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 10-of-18 on face-offs with three ground balls and junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made six saves with five ground balls to earn the win.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Briele Caples who had a team-high three goals. Ryan Mello made six saves to take the loss.
McPartland got the Mavericks on the board first with his 15th goal of the season off an assist from MacSpadyen at the 10:39 mark of the first quarter. Caples answered just under two minutes later to make it a 1-1 game. MacSpadyen closed the opening quarter with two man-up goals and Brenton Mighty added a goal in between for the Spartans to put Mercy in front 3-2 after one quarter.
Scorcia started the second quarter with his first goal of the day to give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead. However, Caples kept the Spartans in the game with his second of the game to bring the score to 4-3 with 13:21 left in the half. Chillianis and Scorcia tallied back-to-back goals to increase the Mercy advantage to three, 6-3, with 4:51 remaining in the half. Tyler Senatore picked up a goal that got St. Thomas Aquinas to within two, 6-4, but McPartland and Scorcia closed the half out with goals to give Mercy an 8-4 lead at halftime.
MacSpadyen and Scorcia recorded two more goals to begin the third quarter, giving the Mavericks a 10-4 advantage with 11:53 left in the frame. Caples and Mighty concluded the quarter with two unanswered goals to make it 10-6 after three quarters.
Mercy outscored the Spartans 3-0 in the fourth quarter with Scorcia scoring twice and MacSpadyen adding another to seal the win for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 38-22 edge in shots, a 34-25 advantage in ground balls and went 13-of-23 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 31st when they play at Molloy College at 12 p.m.
