ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 31, 2018) – Led by a career-high six goals from junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), the No. 13/18 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 15-5 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (9-1, 3-0 ECC) have won a school-record nine games in a row and are 9-1 for the first time since 2011, while the Lions (4-4, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.
Chillianis added five ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) contributed two goals and four assists. Junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) netted three goals and freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) scored two goals with an assist. Sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) produced two goals and junior Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) dished out two assists. Junior Kieran Murchie (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) also recorded an assist and junior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) caused four turnovers and had four ground balls. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made six saves to earn the win.
Molloy was led by Michael Scheuerer who had three goals and an assist. Goalie Ryan Toomey made six saves to take the loss.
MacSpadyen opened the game with two straight goals to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead with 11:43 remaining in the first quarter. Scheuerer made it 2-1 with his first goal of the game, but Mercy would rattle off five straight goals to take a 7-1 lead after one quarter. Chillianis scored twice and McPartland, Martinez and Scorcia also found the back of the net.
McPartland started the scoring in the second quarter to give Mercy an 8-1 lead just 13 seconds into the quarter. The Lions scored two straight goals to close out the half, making it 8-3 at halftime.
Chillianis scored two more goals to start the third quarter to bring the score to 10-3 with 9:11 left in the third quarter. Scheuerer made it 10-4 before Chillianis and MacSpadyen closed the period out with goals to send Mercy into the fourth quarter with a 12-4 lead.
Molloy scored at the 13:54 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 12-5 but Chillianis, Martinez and Scorcia concluded the game with three straight goals to give the Mavericks the win.
Mercy held a 33-24 edge in shots, a 34-27 advantage in ground balls and went 11-of-23 on face-offs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 7th when they host UDC at 2 p.m.
