McPartland Scores Career-High Six Goals as No. 12/15 Men's Lacrosse Earns 18-11 Victory Over UDC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2018) – Led by a career-high six goals from sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 12/15 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned an 18-11 win over ECC foe the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-1, 4-0 ECC) have won ten games in a row and start 10-1 for the first time since 2011, while the Firebirds (7-4, 1-2 ECC) fall below .500 in ECC play.

McPartland also added two assists and three ground balls and junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) contributed four goals and two assists. Freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) scored three times and senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) and sophomore Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) both added a goal and two assists. Freshman Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) picked up a goal and an assist and senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) and junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also scored. Junior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out an assist and had three caused turnovers and sophomore Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a game-high four caused turnovers along with a team-high four ground balls. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made a career-high 18 saves to pick up the win.

UDC was led by Alan Singleton who had a team-high six points on five goals and an assist. Nikolas Lund-Murray made ten saves to take the loss.

After nearly four minutes of scoreless action, MacSpadyen got the Mavericks on the board on an unassisted goal. Cortese, McPartland, Stockton and Scorcia all followed with goals to give Mercy a 5-0 lead with 1:37 left in the first quarter. The Firebirds broke through with a man-up just before the end of the quarter to make it 5-1 after one quarter.

MacSpadyen and McPartland started the scoring in the second quarter to give the Mavericks a 7-1 advantage with 12:51 left in the half. Singleton scored his second of the game to make it 7-2 before McPartland and MacSpadyen rattled off two straight goals to increase the Mercy lead to 9-2 with 5:22 on the clock. UDC ended the half with four straight goals to make it a 9-6 game at halftime.

The Firebirds started the third quarter with a Zach Hart goal to get within two, 9-7. However, the Mavericks went on to score the next seven goals in the quarter to take a commanding 16-7 lead after three quarters. After the Hart goal, McPartland scored three straight and Martinez, Scorcia, McDonough and Chillianis all netted goals to give Mercy some cushion.

UDC cut the deficit to 16-8 after scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter but MacSpadyen and Scorcia answered right back with their final goals of the game to build the Mercy lead to ten, 18-8, with 5:59 remaining. The Firebirds scored three consecutive goals to end the game but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Mercy held a 36-35 edge in shots, UDC held a 43-36 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 11-of-32 on face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 14th when they host NYIT at 3 p.m.
