MacSpadyen Scores Game-High Three Goals as No. 10/13 Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 8/11 NYIT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2018) – Despite a game-high three goals from junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 10/13 Mercy College men's lacrosse team suffered a 9-7 setback to ECC foe No. 8/11 NYIT on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (10-2, 4-1 ECC) have their school-record ten-game winning streak snapped, while the Bears (8-4, 3-0 ECC) have won six games in a row.

Mercy was also led by sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) who had two goals and freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) added a goal and an assist. Senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC) dished out two assists and senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) scored. Junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) contributed an assist and junior Max Littleton (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finished with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 11 saves to take the loss.

NYIT was led by LeRoy Halftown who had a game-high four points on two goals and two assists. Shlomo Amar went 15-of-20 on face-offs and Brian Jockers made nine saves to earn the win.

After nearly seven scoreless minutes of action, Halftown gave the Bears a 1-0 lead on his first of the day following an assist from Matt Chanenchuk. MacSpadyen and McPartland closed the first quarter out with two goals to give Mercy a 2-1 lead after one quarter in the matchup of two nationally ranked teams.

The Bears opened the second quarter with three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead with 8:15 left in the half. McPartland and MacSpadyen came right back with goals to tie the game up at 4-4 with three minutes left in the half. Matt Murphy gave the lead back to NYIT with 48 seconds left, but Scorcia found the back of the net off a pass from Chillianis with just six seconds left in the half to send the teams into halftime tied at 5-5.

NYIT started the third quarter with two unanswered goals to take a 7-5 lead with 11:13 remaining in the quarter. McDonough answered back at the 10:30 mark to make it a 7-6 game, but Murphy and Halftown responded with back-to-back goals to put NYIT up 9-6. MacSpadyen got the Mavericks closer with his third of the day to make it 9-7 after three quarters of play.

Mercy would outshoot the Bears 12-3 in the fourth quarter and Jockers made three saves to keep the Mavericks off the board.

Mercy held a 34-30 edge in shots and NYIT held a 34-28 edge in ground balls and won 15-of-20 face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 21st when they host Lake Erie for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
