MacSpadyen Records Career-High Eight Points as No. 11/16 Men's Lacrosse Battles No. 9/11 Lake Erie on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2018) – Despite a career-high eight points from junior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 11/16 Mercy College men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 overtime decision on Senior Day to No. 9/11 Lake Erie College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall), Aaron Wright (Freeport, N.Y/Freeport), Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC), Matthew Carle (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Christian Gebhardt (West Islip, N.Y./Nassau CC) were recognized.

The Mavericks (10-3) have dropped two games in a row, while the Storm (10-2) get back in the win column after a loss last week.

MacSpadyen had a game-high four goals and four assists and McDonough added a goal and two assists. Freshman Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) netted two goals and an assist and junior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) netted two goals. Martinez scored and added an assist and sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also scored. Junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 12 saves to take the loss.

Lake Erie was led by Lucas Shafer who had a team-high three goals and an assist. Conor Sharkey made 12 saves to earn the win.

MacSpadyen opened the scoring on the day with a goal at the 13:38 mark to put Mercy in front 1-0. Edmond Renaud tied the game up at the 10:08 mark and the game would remain tied at 1-1 heading to the second quarter.

The two teams traded goals to start the second quarter with Chillianis scoring his first of the day to make it 2-2 with 9:44 left in the half. Lake Erie answered with two straight goals to build a 4-2 advantage with 8:32 remaining in the half. Chillianis netted a man-up goal to get the Mavericks within one, 4-3, but the Storm closed the half with two straight goals to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.

Shafer opened the third quarter with a goal to increase the Lake Erie lead to 7-3. Scorcia and McPartland responded with back-to-back goals to make it 7-5 before Micah Daigle scored to give the Storm an 8-5 lead with 7:33 left in the quarter. MacSpadyen followed with two more goals to get the Mavericks within one, 8-7, but Shafer closed the quarter with a goal to give Lake Erie a 9-7 lead after three quarters.

Mitchell Stokes opened the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Storm to make it 10-7 with 9:13 remaining. MacSpadyen and Martinez tallied goals to bring the score to 10-9 with 4:35 remaining in regulation. Daigle netted his second of the day with 1:40 left to give the Storm a two-goal lead, 11-9.

Time looked to be running out on the Mavericks but Scorcia got the Mavericks closer with a goal with 33 seconds left that made it 11-10. Mercy would win the ensuing faceoff and McDonough would score off a feed from Martinez with ten seconds on the clock to tie the game up at 11-11, sending the game into overtime.

Lake Erie won the opening face-off and Gibbons would make an initial save on a Renaud shot before John Kezerian picked up the ground ball and put it into the net to give the Storm the victory.

Lake Erie held a 39-30 edge in shots, a 42-27 advantage in ground balls and won 16-of-27 face-offs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 28th when they play at LIU Post at 2 p.m.
