Martinez Scores Twice as No. 11/17 Men's Lacrosse Plays at No. 14 LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2018) – Despite a team-high two goals from senior Chris Martinez (Uniondale, N.Y./Nassau CC), the No. 11/17 Mercy College men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-5 setback to No. 14 LIU Post on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (10-4, 4-2 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Pioneers (9-4, 5-1 ECC) secure the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Championship with the win. Mercy has earned the No. 3 seed and will play at LIU Post in a semifinal matchup on Wednesday, May 2nd at 3 p.m.

Martinez also added a ground ball and juniors Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Erik Badger (Fayetteville, N.Y./Onondaga CC) and sophomore Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also scored. Senior Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) dished out an assist and junior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made nine saves to take the loss.

LIU Post was led by William Snelders who had a game-high six points on five goals and an assist and Bryan Ochs made 16 saves to earn the win.

After 11 minutes of scoreless action, Badger got the Mavericks on the board with an unassisted goal to make it 1-0 with 3:58 left in the opening quarter. The Pioneers answered with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead before Chillianis ended the quarter with a goal to make it 2-2 after one quarter of play.

LIU Post opened the second quarter with the first four goals to take a 6-2 lead with 4:15 remaining in the half. Martinez ended the run with his first of the day to get the Mavericks within three, 6-3, at halftime.

The Pioneers scored all four goals in the third quarter to build a 10-3 advantage after three quarters. Snelders scored his final goal of the day to start the fourth quarter, making it 11-3. Martinez and McPartland capped off the scoring with two goals but it was not enough as LIU Post came away with the win.

Mercy held a 32-30 edge in shots, while LIU Post held a 23-22 edge in ground balls and went 12-of-18 on face-offs.
