Six Mavericks Record an RBI as Softball Sweeps Stonehill

CLERMONT, FLA. (Mar. 10, 2018) – Powered by six different Mavericks recording an RBI on the day, the Mercy College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Stonehill College with 6-2 and 10-2 victories on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (5-3) move over .500 on the year, while the Skyhawks (0-8) remain winless on the year.

Game 1: Mercy 6, Stonehill 2

The opening game of the day saw the Mavericks open the scoring in the bottom of the first when junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) hit an RBI triple that scored freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) to put Mercy in front 1-0. It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Mercy plated three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Mueller recorded an RBI single and sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) had a two-run single in the frame to conclude the scoring.

The Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) RBI double and another Mueller RBI single to make it 6-0. Stonehill answered with two runs in the top of the fifth but could not get any closer as Mercy held on for the 6-2 win.

Mueller went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Bullock went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Dunlop batted 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) went 2-for-3. Stevens pitched the first six innings with two earned runs allowed to earn her third win of the year.

Stonehill was led by Hannah Ricker who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jennifer Mayette made the start in the circle and took the loss to fall to 0-3.

Game 2: Mercy 10, Stonehill 2

The nightcap saw the Mavericks jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) hit a two-run double and later scored on an error. It stayed 3-0 until the top of the sixth when the Mavericks scored two more runs to build a 5-0 advantage. Mercy scored both runs in the inning following a Skyhawk error with two outs in the inning.

The Mavericks put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with five runs to take a 10-0 lead. Dunlop produced a bases-loaded walk and junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) recorded an RBI single for the first two runs of the frame. Mueller came through with a three-run triple later in the frame that concluded the scoring on the day for Mercy.

Stonehill ended the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not get any closer.

Mueller went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Lemus went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Newham went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Dunlop went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) earned the win in the circle with six scoreless innings pitched earning her second win of the year.

Stonehill was led by Caroline Casey who batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. Genna Hartman took the loss in the circle for the Skyhawks to fall to 0-3.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Jefferson at 4:30 p.m. in Clermont, Florida.
