Six Different Mavericks Record an RBI as Baseball Defeats Nyack, 9-6

POMONA, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2018) – Powered by six different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team recorded 17 hits in a 9-6 victory over Nyack College on Tuesday afternoon at Palisades Credit Union Park.

The Mavericks (9-13) have won four games in a row and are just one win shy of their win total from all of last year heading into conference play, while the Warriors (9-9-1) have dropped three of their last four games.

Senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) and juniors Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) all went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Mavericks. Junior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) batted 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs and junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 3-for-6 with two runs. Sophomore Diego Quinones (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) pitched three innings with one earned run allowed to pick up the win. Senior John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) pitched four scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.

Nyack was led by Luke Kelly who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Hakim Williams went 0.2 innings with five runs allowed to take the loss.

After dropping a 23-3 decision to Nyack the last time the two teams played in Dobbs Ferry, the Mavericks wasted little time in getting their bats going. Sadallah doubled to open the game and Mooradian singled to put runners on first and third. After a Mooradian stolen base, Murphy hit a triple to center field that scored two runs to put Mercy in front 2-0. Carpenter followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Murphy making it 3-0 with no outs in the inning. The Mavericks plated two more runs in the inning when Tenya singled home junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Carpenter to bring the score to 5-0 after the top of the first.

The Warriors would plate a run in the first, second and third innings to make it 5-3 after three innings of play. Mercy tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Carpenter singled to left field to bring home Mooradian who doubled to lead off the inning.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Mavericks bats continued to roll as they scored two more runs in the seventh inning to build an 8-3 lead. Kain recorded an RBI single in the inning and Hagerty doubled home Garcia to increase the Mercy lead to five.

Mooradian drove in Sadallah with a groundout to shortstop to finish off the scoring for the Mavericks in the top of the eighth. Nyack would score two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth but it was not enough as Mercy came away with the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, March 29th when they host NYIT at 3 p.m.
