Newham Records Team-High Five Hits and Four Runs Scored as Softball Splits With NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2018) – Led by a team-high five hits and four runs scored on the day from junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College), the Mercy College softball team dropped a 10-7 decision to ECC foe NYIT before earning a 6-3 victory in the nightcap on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (14-11, 4-6 ECC) have won three of their last four games, while the Bears (6-14, 4-6 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games.

Game 1: NYIT 10, Mercy 7

Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) and a steal of home by freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista). The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 after one inning.

After a scoreless second inning for the Mavericks, NYIT exploded for four runs on two hits and two Mercy errors to take a 5-2 lead after two innings. The Mavericks tied the game up in the top of the third with three runs to bring the score to 5-5. Sophomore Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) hit a two-run single to left center and senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) also scored after an error by the NYIT second baseman to cap off the scoring.

The Bears retook the lead in the fourth inning with a run to build a 6-5 lead. The Mavericks came right back in the fifth inning with two runs to retake the lead at 7-6. Pellizzaro smacked a two-run home run to center field that gave the lead back to the Mavericks.

NYIT took the lead back for good in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on two hits to earn an 8-7 lead. The Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth that increased the lead to 10-7. Mercy was unable to score again and the hosts came away with the game one win.

Newham went 2-for-4 with three runs and Pellizzaro batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Carmichael went 2-for-2 with two RBI and tossed four innings in the circle with seven runs allowed to take the loss. Mueller batted 2-for-3 with two runs and Wootten went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

NYIT was led by Kylie Lacerte who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Sophia Medina pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Game 2: Mercy 6, NYIT 3

The nightcap remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when NYIT scored on a Lacerte home run to take a 1-0 lead. Mercy responded with a run in the top of the fifth on a Mueller double to left center that scored junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) to make it 1-1.

The Bears retook the lead at 3-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mercy responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to build a 5-3 lead. Senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) started the scoring with a two-run double that tied the game up at 3-3. Newham later singled home McCormick to make it 4-3 and Mueller capped off the scoring in the inning with a single to left field that gave the Mavericks a 5-3 lead.

Dunlop drove in the final run of the game for Mercy on a bases-loaded walk and juniors Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) and Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) limited the Bears to just three runs to give Mercy the win.

Newham went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI and Mueller batted 2-for-4 with two RBI. McCormick went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Dunlop went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gorman went 5.1 innings with three runs allowed to earn her fourth win. Stevens pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.

Lacerte led NYIT with three RBI and Sofia Evangelista went 5.2 innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 12th when they host Molloy at 2:30 p.m.
