Lemus Homers Three Times as Softball Sweeps Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Apr. 17, 2018) – Powered by three home runs and six RBI from senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) in game two, the Mercy College softball team earned 11-1 and 11-3 victories over Georgian Court University in five innings on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (18-13) have won four games in a row, while the Lions (20-17) have dropped four games in a row.

Game 1: Mercy 11, Georgian Court 1

The opening game of the day remained scoreless until the top of the third when the Mavericks scored a pair of unearned runs after senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) reached on an error by the third baseman with two outs.

Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) pitched a scoreless bottom of the third before Mercy exploded for six runs on seven hits to increase their lead to 8-0. Senior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) drove in the first run on a sacrifice bunt and junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) singled home the second run of the inning to make it 4-0. Freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) plated Dunlop with a single to the pitcher and would later score in the inning on an error by the left fielder. Wootten capped off the scoring in the inning with a two-run home run to right center that gave the Mavericks a comfortable 8-0 lead.

Georgian Court scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-1. However, Mercy would put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth to build an 11-1 edge. Dunlop started the scoring with an RBI double to left field and junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) tripled home Dunlop before scoring on a passed ball. Gorman pitched a scoreless fifth inning to give the Mavericks the win via the run-rule.

Wootten went 1-for-4 with two RBI and Dunlop went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mueller batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and Newham went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lemus went 3-for-4 with two runs and Gorman allowed just three hits and one earned run to pick up her sixth win of the season.

Marissa Trezza went 1-for-2 with an RBI and allowed five earned runs in the circle to take the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 11, Georgian Court 3

The nightcap saw the Mavericks jump on Georgian Court pitching with Lemus hitting a two-run home run to left center in the first inning to put Mercy up 2-0. Senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) increased the advantage to 3-0 with a leadoff home run in the second inning. Later in the inning Lemus delivered a three-run home run to left center that gave the Mavericks a 6-0 lead.

After a scoreless inning tossed by junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC), Mercy tacked on a run in the third inning when Lloyd homered to left center to make it a 7-0 game. Georgian Court answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run from Samantha Reilly.

Mercy quickly responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to increase the advantage to 11-2. Lemus hit her third home run of the game to give the Mavericks a 9-2 lead and sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) finished off the scoring with a two-run home run that helped seal the deal for Mercy. The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the inning but could not get any closer, giving the Mavericks the win via the run-rule.
