McCormick Homers and Records Team-High Three RBI as Softball Sweeps St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2018) – Powered by a home run and team-high three RBI on the day from senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs), the Mercy College softball team earned 7-5 and 4-1 victories over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.

The Mavericks (20-13, 8-8 ECC) have won six games in a row and improve to .500 in ECC play, while the Spartans (11-23, 6-10 ECC) have dropped three games in a row.

Game 1: Mercy 7, St. Thomas Aquinas 5

The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first on a two-run single from senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) that scored senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) and freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista). The Spartans responded with three runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Mercy tied the game in the top of the second when junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) recorded an RBI single that scored McCormick to bring the score to 3-3. St. Thomas Aquinas went back in front with a run in the bottom of the second to build a 4-3 advantage.

After a scoreless third inning, the Mavericks took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth. Junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) hit an RBI single to left field that scored Pellizzaro to tie the game up at 4-4. McCormick later stole home in the inning to put Mercy back in front 5-4.

The Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth when McCormick hit a two-run single that plated sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) and Lemus to make it 7-4. The Spartans would score an unearned run in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as Mercy took game one.

McCormick went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and Pellizzaro went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lemus went 2-for-3 with two runs and Dunlop went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Newham batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) tossed a complete game to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Melissa Sadler went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Spartans and Colleen Borum went five innings to take the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 1

Mercy once again got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) driving in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Bullock drove in the second run on a groundout to make it 2-0.

The Mavericks took a 3-0 lead with a run in the second on a Mueller RBI single that scored Dunlop. After a scoreless third inning by both teams, McCormick put the finishing touches on the win for Mercy with a leadoff home run to left center in the fourth inning.

Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) would toss another complete game and not allow a run until the seventh inning. However, the Spartans could not get more than one run in the inning, giving the Mavericks the sweep.

McCormick went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Mueller went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lemus batted 2-for-4 and Dunlop went 1-for-3 with a run. Jameson allowed just five hits and had six strikeouts to pick up her eighth win of the year.

Caitlyn Francoeur went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Spartans and Paige Toothaker allowed two runs without recording an out to take the loss.
