DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2018) – Powered by a team-high eight RBI on the day from senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC), the Mercy College softball team earned 6-1 and 7-6 Senior Day victories over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field.
In a ceremony prior the game, seniors Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC), Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College), Lemus, Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) were recognized.
The Mavericks (22-13, 10-8 ECC) have won eight games in a row, while the Spartans (11-25, 6-12 ECC) have dropped five games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 6, St. Thomas Aquinas 1
Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lemus hit a two-run home run after freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) reached on an error. The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third with a run on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-1.
The Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a pair of sacrifices from Lemus and McCormick to bring the score to 4-1 after five innings. Lemus made it 6-1 in the sixth inning when she hit a two-run double to left center that scored Mueller and freshman Casey Akers (Keller, Texas/Timber Creek).
Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) would allow just four hits and one run to earn the win and sophomore Alexis Carmichael (Allen, Texas/Allen) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the win.
Lemus went 2-for-3 with a run and five RBI, recording her 100th hit as a Maverick. Mueller went 2-for-4 with three runs and McCormick went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Ashley Landolina who went 2-for-4 and Briana Keaveney went the distance with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Game 2: Mercy 7, St. Thomas Aquinas 6 – 8 Innings
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lemus scored on an error after tripling to right field earlier in the inning. The Spartans tied the game up in the second inning with an Amanda Leone home run to left field.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the top bottom of the inning when Mueller singled home Lloyd who singled earlier in the inning. St. Thomas Aquinas took the lead in the third inning when Amanda Schweitzer hit a two-run home run making it 3-2.
The Spartans made it 5-2 with two more runs in the fourth inning. Lemus put the Mavericks within a run when she hit a two-run single to center field that made it 5-4 after four innings. Mercy tied the game up in the fifth inning when Pellizzaro hit a home run to left field that brought the score to 5-5.
The visitors scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to retake the lead at 6-5. Lemus answered for the Mavericks in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to center field that made it 6-6.
Neither team could score in the seventh inning so extra innings were needed. After the Spartans went scoreless in the top of the eighth, junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) led off the Mercy eighth inning with a walk-off home run to right field.
Lemus went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Newham went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Pellizzaro went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Mueller went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) went the distance with four earned runs allowed to earn the win.
Leone went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two home runs for the Spartans. Colleen Borum pitched seven innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host LIU Post at 12 p.m.
