DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2018) – Powered by four different Mavericks recording a home run, the Mercy College softball team earned a 10-4 victory in game one before falling 10-7 in game two to ECC foe LIU Post on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (23-14, 11-9 ECC) have their nine-game winning streak snapped with the loss in game two, while the Pioneers (26-16, 15-5 ECC) have split their last three doubleheaders.
Game 1: Mercy 10, LIU Post 4
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with both runs coming on a fielder's choice. It remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third when the Mavericks scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) doubled home senior Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC) and freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) to score two runs and Mueller also drove in a run on a single to put Mercy in front.
LIU Post retook the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs to build a 4-3 advantage. The Mavericks took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning when junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) hit an RBI double to tie the game and later scored on an error to put Mercy ahead 5-4.
Mercy put the game away in the fifth inning when they plated five runs on five hits to take a 10-4 lead. Senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) started the scoring with a two-run home run to right field, Mueller brought home another run on an RBI single and Lemus capped off the scoring with a two-run double to right center. Junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) did not allow a run in the final three innings to pick up the win.
Mueller went 4-for-4 with two RBI and McCormick went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Pellizzaro went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Lemus went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Gorman allowed four earned runs to pick up her ninth win of the season.
Julia Seader led LIU Post by going 1-for-4 with two RBI and Hannah Olshevski allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss.
Game 2: LIU Post 10, Mercy 7
The Pioneers once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Mercy responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Newham scored on an error to make it 2-1. LIU Post increased their lead to 3-1 in the second inning when Abbey Fortin singled through the left side.
The visitors made it 4-1 in the fourth inning when Seader homered to center field. The Mavericks came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. Senior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) hit a three-run home run to tie the game and Newham homered later in the inning to put Mercy back on top.
Sophomore Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif./Helix) gave the Mavericks a 6-4 lead when she doubled to bring home Pellizzaro. The Pioneers responded with five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good at 9-6. The visitors would tack on a run in the seventh to make it 10-6 before Pellizzaro homered in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough.
Pellizzaro went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and Lloyd went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Newham went 2-for-4 with two runs and Mueller, Lemus and McCormick all recorded two hits. Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) pitched the first six innings to take the loss.
LIU Post was led by Fortin who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Katie Humhej went the distance to earn the win.
