DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2018) – Powered by a career-high six points from freshman Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), the No. 10 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 20-0 shutout victory over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (11-2, 5-1 ECC) have won six of their last seven games, while the Firebirds (1-11, 0-6 ECC) remain winless in ECC play. The shutout is the second in program history, joining the 19-0 victory over Holy Family last season. The 20-goal margin of victory is the largest in program history.
Corace had two goals, four assists and two ground balls and junior Marissa Spinazzola (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) scored a career-high three goals. Junior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) added three goals and a game-high 13 draw controls. Isnardi now has 73 goals on the season, surpassing the single-season record of 71 she set last season. Freshman Deirdre Enright (Northport, N.Y./Northport) finished with two goals and an assist and freshman Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) both scored twice. Senior Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) produced a goal and two assists and senior Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) tallied a goal and two assists. Senior Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) finished with a goal and an assist and sophomore Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), senior Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and freshman Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) also scored. Sophomore Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) dished out an assist and freshman Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and senior Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) both played a half in goal to post a shutout.
UDC was led by Shemara Jefferson who had two shots and a caused turnover. Jada Foy made nine saves to take the loss.
After a tough loss their last time out, the Mavericks got back to work with Sergio scoring a pair of goals just 1:20 into the contest to put Mercy up 2-0. Jehle responded just 14 seconds later with her lone goal of the day to make it a 3-0 game. Isnardi then tallied back-to-back goals on assists from Davidson and Sanchez to increase the Mercy lead to 5-0 with 26:24 left in the first half.
Davidson, Isnardi and Mackie followed with three more goals to give Mercy an 8-0 lead less than ten minutes into the game. Gumowski and Znaniecki made it 10-0 before Enright scored her first collegiate goals back-to-back to put the Mavericks ahead 12-0 with 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Spinazzola and Corace gave Mercy a 14-0 advantage before Cotton scored her first collegiate goal to conclude the half, giving the Mavericks a 15-0 lead at halftime.
Cotton and Spinazzola opened the second half with goals to make it a 17-0 game with 22 minutes left. Coticchio, Corace and Spinazzola concluded the scoring for the Mavericks to give Mercy a commanding 20-0 advantage with 10:39 remaining.
Mercy held a 31-4 edge in shots, an 18-7 edge in ground balls and a 17-5 advantage in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 21st at Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
