DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2018) – Despite a game-high two hits from sophomore John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 16 University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (19-22) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Chargers (28-6) have won four games in a row.
Mooradian went 2-for-3 and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) and juniors Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) also recorded a hit. Senior Tyler Cinelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) pitched 0.2 innings with four runs allowed to take the loss. Junior Odalis Perez (New York, N.Y./Sullivan CC) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and freshman Anthony Amato (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown High School West) tossed three scoreless innings. Junior Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings.
New Haven was led by George Pappas who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Will Aldam went 6.0 innings with one hit allowed to earn the win.
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on two hits and five walks. Joe Caico recorded an RBI single to start the inning and Pappas singled through the left side with two runs scoring to make it 3-0. James Myers brought home the final run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 4-0.
It remained 4-0 until the top of the eighth when New Haven scored three more runs to make it 7-0. The Mavericks would put runners on second and third in the ninth inning after a single from Carpenter and a double from Mooradian. However, a groundout would end the game, giving the Chargers the victory.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 27th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
