Three Mavericks Record an RBI as Softball Plays at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2018) – Despite three Mavericks recording an RBI on the day, the Mercy College softball team dropped 4-1 and 8-7 decisions to ECC foe LIU Post in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (11-10, 1-5 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Pioneers (16-10, 6-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.

Game 1: LIU Post 4, Mercy 1

The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the second when the Pioneers plated a run on an RBI single from Gianna Gatto that made it 1-0 after two innings.

It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Pioneers scored three more runs to take a 4-0 lead with two of the runs being unearned.

The Mavericks scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh when junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) hit an RBI triple to right field that scored sophomore Jessica Lombardi (Cliffside Park, N.J./Cliffside Park) to make it 4-1. However, a groundout to the pitcher ended the threat and the game.

Newham went 3-for-4 with an RBI and seniors Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif./Southwestern CC), Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) and freshman Casey Akers (Keller, Texas/Timber Creek) all recorded a hit. Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) tossed a complete game with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.

LIU Post was led by Gatto who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hannah Olshevski tossed a complete game to earn the win.

Game 2: LIU Post 8, Mercy 7

Mercy jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first with senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) driving home Newham on a groundout to second after Newham led off the game with a single. The Pioneers responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead following three hits and an error in the inning.

The Mavericks tied the game up in the top of the third when Lemus hit a two-run home run to left center that made it a 3-3 game. Mercy took the lead back in the top of the fourth with three runs, building a 6-3 lead. Wootten doubled home a pair of runs and senior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) scored on an error after leading off the inning with a single to give the lead back to Mercy.

LIU Post responded right back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-6 lead. The Mavericks tied the game up at 7-7 with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Pioneers took the lead for good with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to build an 8-7 advantage.

Mercy loaded the bases in the sixth inning but were unable to find the equalizer and the Mavericks went down in order in the seventh to give LIU Post the win.

Newham went 3-for-5 with a run and Wootten went 1-for-5 with three RBI. Lemus batted 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) went 2-for-5 with two runs.
