DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2018) – Powered by two home runs and three RBI on the day from junior Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), the Mercy College softball team earned 5-1 and 7-4 victories over ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (13-10, 3-5 ECC) snap a four-game losing streak, while the Purple Knights (12-16, 1-7 ECC) have dropped five games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 5, Bridgeport 1
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead over the Purple Knights with a run in the bottom of the third. Junior Mackenzie Dunlop (Surrey, British Columbia/West Virginia State University) singled to lead off the inning and would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from freshman Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista).
It remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Mercy struck again following an RBI double from senior Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev./Indian Springs) that scored senior Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia/Eastern Arizona CC) to make it 2-0.
Junior Yazzy Jameson (San Diego, Calif./Southwestern CC) tossed another scoreless inning in the top of the fifth before the Mavericks put together three runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-0. Junior Mikayla Newham (Redding, Calif./Yavapai College) led off the inning with a home run and senior Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Monroe College) brought home a run on a groundout to bring the score to 4-0. Stevens capped off the scoring with a home run to center field that gave the Mavericks a 5-0 lead after five innings.
Jameson kept the Purple Knights off the board until the top of the seventh when Allison Luzzi hit a solo homer to right center to make it 5-1. However, Jameson did not allow another run and sealed the win for the Mavericks.
Newham went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Stevens went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Pellizzaro batted 2-for-3 with a run and McCormick went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jameson allowed just one earned run with two strikeouts to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Luzzi went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Bridgeport and Amanda Staheli went 4.2 innings with three earned runs to take the loss.
Game 2: Mercy 7, Bridgeport 4
The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead in game two with two runs in the second inning. After Wootten walked, Stevens smacked a home run to right field that made it 2-0. The Purple Knights got a run back in the top of the third when Samantha Sabor hit an RBI single to right center.
Mercy responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs on a two-run double from Pellizzaro and a double from Lloyd that built the Mercy lead to 5-1. Bridgeport answered right back with a run in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-2 game.
The Mavericks extended the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Wootten hit an RBI single to right field and Dunlop also scored in the inning to give Mercy some cushion.
Bridgeport would score a run in the top of the fifth and top of the seventh but it was not enough as Mercy came away with the win.
Stevens went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Wootten batted 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Pellizzaro batted 2-for-2 with two RBI and senior Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Newham batted 1-for-4 with a run and junior Raina Gorman (Ardsley, N.Y./Florida Southwestern State College) pitched 4.1 innings with two earned runs allowed to pick up the win. Stevens pitched the final 2.2 innings with one run allowed and four strikeouts.
Sabor led Bridgeport going 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ashley Eisnor pitched 3.2 innings with seven runs allowed to take the loss.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 10th when they play at NYIT at 2:30 p.m.
