DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2018) – Despite a game-high four RBI from junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and a home run from junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (12-18, 3-5 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Lions (18-13, 11-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Ortiz Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI and Garcia went 1-for-5 with his seventh home run of the season. Junior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 3-for-5 and freshman Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) batted 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior Josue Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and freshman Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) pitched the first three innings with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Molloy was led by Matt Overton who went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Anthony Vano pitched the first seven innings with two runs allowed and 11 strikeouts to earn the win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second. Molloy increased their lead to 6-0 after two more runs in the third and a run in the fourth.
The Mavericks got on the board in the fourth inning when Ortiz Sanchez doubled home Jocelyn, who doubled in the previous at bat, making it 6-1. The Lions tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-1 lead. Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Garcia led off the inning with a home run to right center to bring the score to 9-2.
Molloy scored their final two runs in the top of eighth to take an 11-2 lead. Mercy rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to get the score to 11-6. Ortiz Sanchez hit a three-run triple to right center and Perez singled home Ortiz Sanchez to cap off the scoring. Mercy was unable to score again giving the Lions the victory and the sweep.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 11th when they play at Lincoln for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
