DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 3, 2018) – Despite a home run and two RBI from junior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (20-26, 9-12 ECC) have lost two games in a row, while the Purple Knights (12-31, 9-12 ECC) have won four of their last five games.
Garcia went 2-for-3 with his eighth home run of the season and two RBI. Junior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and junior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Scott Kelnhofer (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and senior Shaine Carpenter (Florham Park, N.J./Saint Anselm College) went 1-for-3. Junior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) pitched the first 6.2 innings with five runs allowed to take the loss.
Bridgeport was led by Mark Komarmi who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Jason Burger went 8.2 innings with five runs allowed to earn the win. Jonathan Brooks recorded one out to earn the save.
The contest remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Komarmi drove in two runs on a single to right field that made it 2-0. Another run would score on a fielder's choice and Tom Rinaldi drove in the final two runs on a single to center field to make it 5-0. Garcia got the Mavericks on the board in the bottom of the inning on a Garcia home run to get within 5-1.
The Purple Knights added a run in the eighth and ninth innings to build a 7-1 lead heading to the Mavericks final at bat. Mercy would score four runs in the inning to make it 7-5, but could not get any closer as Bridgeport came away with the win. Ortiz Sanchez drove in the first run on a triple and Garcia plated the second run with a single to center field and later scored on a double by Hagerty. Kelnhofer brought home the final run of the game on a single to shortstop but a fly out to right field would end the game.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, May 4th when they play at Bridgeport at 1 p.m.
