DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2018) – Powered by four different Mavericks scoring in the second half, the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory over Dominican College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the first time since 2013, while the Chargers (0-1) open their season with a loss.
Mercy was led by senior Alejandro Alvarez (Pereira, Colombia/American International College), juniors Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and Maximilano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and sophomore Nigel Hawthorne (Queens, N.Y./Millersville University) who all scored goals. Junior Jose Izarra (Valencia, Venezuela/Marshalltown CC) had two assists and senior Freddy Marcel (Bay Shore, N.Y./SUNY Delhi) and redshirt freshman Ryan Sipavicius (Flushing, N.Y./Holy Cross) also dished out an assist. Sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) played the full 90 minutes in net to pick up the win.
Dominican had five different players record a shot and goalkeeper Tyler Doll made six saves to take the loss.
The opening half saw little scoring chances for either team, but Sipavicius and Rebolledo-Camus both recorded shots on goal in the half that were stopped by Doll. The teams headed into halftime scoreless with Mercy holding a 3-2 edge in shots.
After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless action in the second half, Rebolledo-Camus received a pass from Izarra and fired the ball into the lower right side of the goal from the left to give Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
Just under a minute later Alvarez made it 2-0 when Izarra fed a thru ball from midfield which led to a breakaway opportunity for Alvarez who capitalized to get the Mavericks another goal.
The offensive output did not stop there for Mercy a Mangada tacked on a third goal in the 67th minute that increased the Mavericks lead to 3-0. The junior received a cross from Marcel and headed it into the back of the net for his second goal of the year.
It remained 3-0 until the 89th minute when Hawthorne fired home a cross from Sipavicius that gave Mercy a 4-0 advantage, putting the finishing touches on a second straight convincing win to open the season.
The Mavericks backline was solid again not allowing a shot on goal throughout the entire contest.
Mercy held a 17-5 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 6th when they host Stonehill at 3 p.m.
