Sipavicius Scores and Williams Makes Seven Saves as No. 17 Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Tie With Millersville

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2018) – Powered by a goal from redshirt freshman Ryan Sipavicius (Flushing, N.Y./Holy Cross) and seven saves from sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College), the No. 17 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Millersville University on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-0-1) remain unbeaten on the year, while the Marauders (2-1-3) record their third straight tie.

Sipavicius recorded his first collegiate goal and had two shots on goal. Junior Maximiliano Rebolledo- Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) contributed an assist and Williams made seven saves.

Millersville was led by Aaron Skelly who scored and by Spencer Shortt who dished out an assist. Darian McCauley made ten saves.

Mercy opened up the contest with three shots on goal in the first three minutes, but McCauley stopped all three to keep the game scoreless. Millersville struck back with two scoring opportunities of their own but Williams made two stops to keep the score at 0-0.

Williams would make one more save in the half and McCauley made another save before the Mavericks finally found the back of the net in the 41st minute. Sipavicius received a nicely played cross from Rebolledo-Camus and headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Mercy holding an 8-4 edge in shots.

The second half saw Williams make an early save, but the Marauders would tie the game up in the 50th minute when Skelly found the back of the net following an assist from Shortt that made it 1-1.

Both teams would have multiple scoring chances in the second half, but Williams made four saves and McCauley stopped three shots to keep the game tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation.

The first overtime period saw McCauley make two saves, but neither team was able to find the back of the net so the two teams headed for a second overtime period.

Mercy recorded all five shots in the second overtime and had four corner kicks, but were unable to score leading to the game ending in a tie.

The Mavericks held a 22-11 edge in shots and a 13-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 22nd when they host Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
