Achondo and Mangada Record Two Shots on Goal as No. 15 Men's Soccer Hosts Bridgeport

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2018) – Despite a game-high-tying two shots on goal from juniors Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino) and Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the No. 15 Mercy College men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-1-1, 1-1 ECC) suffer their first loss of the season, while the Purple Knights (4-2, 2-1 ECC) move over .500 in ECC action.

Sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made two saves to take the loss in net for Mercy.

Nikolai Vadseth led Bridgeport with two goals and Marlon Montanella also scored. Tom Godden and Yoel Salvador added assists and Carlos Tofern made nine saves to earn the win.

The Mavericks came out as the aggressors early on, forcing Tofern to make a pair of saves in the first six minutes of action. Tofern would make three saves in the opening half and Williams added one for the Mavericks to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Mercy continued to apply pressure to the Bridgeport backline in the second half with Tofern making three saves in the first 20 minutes of the half. The Purple Knights would find the back of the net in the 69th minute when Vadseth put home a rebound of a Salvador shot to make it 1-0.

It remained 1-0 until the 74th minute when the Mavericks committed a foul in the box, leading to a Montanella penalty kick that made it 2-0. Tofern would come up with three more saves to keep Mercy off the board and Bridgeport added on another goal in the 88th minute to earn a 3-0 win.

Mercy held an 18-8 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 29th when they play at Queens at 4 p.m.
