Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hawthorne and Mangada Score to Lead Men's Soccer to First Win at Queens Since 2007

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2018) – Powered by goals from sophomore Nigel Hawthorne (Queens, N.Y./Millersville University) and junior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned their first win at ECC foe Queens College since 2007 with a 2-1 victory over the Knights on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (5-1-1, 2-1 ECC) bounce back from their first loss of the season, while the Knights (4-4-1, 2-2 ECC) fall to .500 in ECC play.

Hawthorne recorded his second goal of the season and Mangada now has a team-high five goals on the year. Juniors Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) both recorded an assist and sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made two saves to earn the win.

Andras Breuer scored for Queens and Michael Bolvin made two saves to take the loss.

Mercy wasted little time in getting on the board as Mangada scored in the 10th minute to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The junior received a lower corner kick from Rozenblum and Mangada beat the keeper in the middle of the net to give Mercy an early lead.

The Mavericks recorded one more shot on goal in the half, but Mercy would hold Queens without a shot on goal heading into halftime up, 1-0.

Williams made his first save of the day in the 52nd minute to keep the Mavericks ahead. Mercy tacked on another goal in the 79th minute when a giveaway by Queens led to Rebolledo-Camus finding Hawthorne, who beat the goalie in the lower right corner to make it 2-0.

Queens scored their lone goal of the game in the 84th minute on a penalty kick by Breuer after a Mercy foul in the box. The Mavericks would withstand another Breuer shot on goal in the 86th minute to come away with the road win.

Queens held a 12-10 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 3rd when they host Daemen at 3 p.m.
