Reyes and Ioannou Score to Give No. 8 Women's Soccer a 2-1 Victory Over Le Moyne

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2018) – Led by goals from freshman Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) and senior RaeAnn Ioannou (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge), the No. 8 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Le Moyne College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, members of the 2017 team were presented with a Final Four banner by the Athletic Department and President Hall.

The Mavericks (4-1) have won three games in a row, while the Dolphins (2-4) have dropped four games in a row.

Reyes recorded her team-leading third goal of the year and Ioannou added her first goal of the year. Junior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) and freshman Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) dished out assists and sophomore goalie Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made six saves to pick up the win.

Le Moyne was led by Lexi Aquilino who scored and by Maria Morotti who contributed an assist. Goalkeeper Anastasija Cumika made four saves in a losing effort.

The opening half saw Cumika make a stop in the 14th minute before Torres was forced to make saves in the 16th and 21st minutes. The Dolphins opened the scoring when Aquilino chipped the ball over the keeper into the net following a pass from Morotti that made it 1-0.

It remained 1-0 heading into halftime as Le Moyne held a 9-6 edge in shots and forced Torres to make four saves in the half.

Torres made two more saves to open the second half before the Mavericks finally got on the board in the 53rd minute. Ioannou headed the ball into the back of the net following an Elizarraras corner kick that evened the score up at 1-1.

The Mercy offense continued to roll as less than three minutes later the Mavericks found the back of the net again to take a 2-1 lead. McKail fed a thru ball to Reyes who fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net to give the Mavericks the lead for good.

The Mercy backline would hold the Dolphins without a shot on goal for the rest of the contest, giving the Mavericks their third straight win.

Mercy held a 16-12 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 22nd when they host Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
