DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 86th minute from senior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) after a corner kick by junior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom), the No. 8 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1, 2-0 ECC) have won four games in a row and remain unbeaten in ECC play, while the Purple Knights (3-3, 1-1 ECC) drop their first ECC game of the year.
Noble scored her second goal of the year and had an assist. The senior scored the game-winning goal at Bridgeport last year in the 85th minute. Freshman Juliana Conforti (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made five saves to earn the win.
Bridgeport received a goal from Maegen Doyle and an assist from Amanda Ebbesson. Jennifer Wendelius made three saves in taking the loss.
The Purple Knights had the first real scoring opportunity in the first half when Torres stopped a Doyle penalty kick in the 10th minute of action. Torres made three more saves later in the half to keep the game scoreless.
The Mavericks finally got on the board in the 43rd minute when Noble sent a cross from right to left where Conforti was waiting and headed the ball into the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks held a 1-0 lead at halftime despite being outshot, 8-4.
Torres started the second half with another save and Wendelius made a stop on an Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) shot in the 54th minute to keep the score at 1-0. The Purple Knights tied the game up in the 58th minute when Ebbesson sent a thru ball in for Doyle who fired the ball into the top right to make it 1-1.
The score remained 1-1 heading into the final five minutes of regulation and overtime looked like a possibility. However, Noble would finish off a Brandt corner in the 86th with a shot to the upper right corner of the goal to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Mercy held on the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Shots were tied at 11-11 and Mercy held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, September 24th when they play at Holy Family at 4 p.m.
