DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2018) – Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) and a game-high three assists from senior Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the No. 6 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a convincing 6-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-1) have won five games in a row, while the Lightning (8-2) see their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Noble now has four goals on the year and freshmen Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) and Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), senior Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) and junior Mackenzie Warner (Athens, Pa./Corning CC) also scored. Juniors Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) and Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and senior Destiny Guerra (Simi Valley, Calif./Highline CC) dished out assists and sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made two saves in 72:59 minutes of action to earn the win. Freshman Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) played the final 17:01 in net and made one save.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Alanna Speaks who scored and by Jenna Fannon who had an assist. Marta Lopez made the start in net and played 64:07 minutes in goal with two saves to take the loss.
Mercy opened up the scoring in the 5th minute when Noble headed a ball into the net following a pass from Elizarraras and Seara to make it 1-0. The Lightning quickly responded in the 8th minute when Fannon fed Speaks a thru ball from midfield which led to a breakaway and a tied game at 1-1.
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the 28th minute when Ferrante sent a cross from left to right and Noble put the ball into the net to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. It remained 2-1 until the final minute of the first half when Ferrante hit a shot off the crossbar and Reyes followed it up with a header into the back of the net to make it 3-1 heading into halftime.
Mercy continued to dominate the game in the second half when Hoyt recorded her first collegiate goal when she fired a shot into the left corner of the net after receiving a thru ball from Guerra, increasing the Mavericks lead to 4-1.
Warner made it 5-1 in the 67th minute with her first goal as a Maverick off another assist from Ferrante. Wright finished off the scoring for Mercy with a goal off a free kick in the 69th minute that made it 6-1.
Mercy held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 29th when they play at Queens at 1 p.m.
