Reyes Scores Game-Winning Goal in 11th Minute to Give No. 6 Women's Soccer a 1-0 Victory Over Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2018) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 11th minute of action from freshman Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana), off an assist from senior RaeAnn Ioannou (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge), the No. 6 Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over ECC foe Queens College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (7-1, 3-0 ECC) have won six games in a row, while the Knights (2-5-1, 1-1-1 ECC) drop their first ECC game of the year.

Reyes scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year and Ioannou picked up her first assist of the season. Sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made three saves to post the shutout win.

Shannon Gibbons led Queens with two shots on goal and Shenae Kreps made two saves to take the loss.

Junior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) recorded the first shot on goal for either team in the 8th minute. The Mavericks would score the lone goal of the game in the 11th minute when Reyes headed a cross from Ioannou from the right side into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Agnes Stanton forced Torres to make a save in the 23rd minute, but the Mavericks backline held strong and would not allow another shot on goal the remainder of the half.

The second half saw Mercy look for more goals with sophomore Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) hitting the post in the 60th minute. Reyes forced the Knights to make a team save in the 70th minute following a header shot. Torres made two saves in the second half to keep Queens off the board, giving Mercy the 1-0 road victory.

Mercy held a 10-4 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 3rd when they host Daemen at 12 p.m.
