Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Seara Records Game-High Two Shots on Goal and Torres Makes Three Saves as No. 3 Women's Soccer Battles AIC

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 2, 2018) – Despite a game-high two shots on goal from junior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and three saves from sophomore Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the No. 3 Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 hard-fought double-overtime decision to American International College on Sunday night at Knights Field.

The Mavericks (1-1) drop their first game of the year, while the Yellow Jackets (1-1) pick up their first win of 2018.

Seara had three shots overall and seniors Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) and Corinna Ferrante (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and junior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) also had a shot on goal. Torres made three stops to take her first loss of the season.

AIC was led by Ariana Miranda who scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute off a cross from Federica Frew. Mikayla Demanche made five saves to pick up the win.

The contest saw limited scoring chances for either team, but the Yellow Jackets recorded the first shot on goal that was stopped by Torres in the 19th minute. Ferrante later forced Demanche to make a save in the 27th minute.

Seara concluded the scoring chances in the first half with two shots on goal coming in the 32nd and 40th minutes, but Demanche stopped both to keep the game tied at 0-0 at halftime.

The second half saw AIC record two shots on goal. However, Torres was able to handle both keeping the game tied at 0-0 after regulation time.

After 90 minutes of scoreless action, overtime would be needed and Mercy recorded the lone two shots in the opening frame but was unable to capitalize, leading to a second overtime period.

Noble recorded a shot on goal in the second overtime period, but the Yellow Jackets would secure the win in the 107th minute. Frew played a long cross from the left side into the front of the goal and Miranda headed the ball into the back of the net to give AIC the 1-0 victory.

Mercy held a 12-7 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jim O'Brien and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 6th when they play at Adelphi at 6 p.m.
