WATERBURY, Conn. (Jan. 16, 2019) – Despite a game-high 24 points from sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) on 8-of-12 shooting, the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered an 85-70 setback to Post University on Wednesday night at the Drubner Center.
The Mavericks (3-12) have dropped nine games in a row, while the Eagles (7-8) snap a three-game losing streak.
Brown added four rebounds and four assists and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 14 points. Junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) recorded ten points and freshman Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) netted a career-high eight points.
Post was led by Gabriela Middleton who had a team-high 22 points.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held a 7-3 advantage with 8:12 left in the opening quarter. Mercy came back on a 19-7 run, capped off by a Brown layup, that gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the game, 22-14, with 59 seconds remaining in the period. Mercy headed into the second quarter with a 22-15 lead after shooting 60.0 percent in the first quarter.
Mercy built the lead back to eight, 25-17, on an Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) layup at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter. However, Post closed out the half on a 21-7 run to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.
The Eagles began the third quarter on a 7-2 run to increase the lead to 11, 45-34, with 8:17 on the clock. Mercy answered back by cutting the lead to six, 47-41, on a Santos three with 5:11 left in the period. After a Post timeout, the hosts ensued with an 8-0 run to put the lead to 14, 55-41, with 2:54 remaining in the quarter. Mercy later made it a seven-point game in the period, but headed into the final quarter down nine, 60-51.
Post started the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to build their lead to 71-53 with 7:15 remaining and held on the rest of the way for the win.
Mercy shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the floor, 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from downtown and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the foul line. Post shot 56.4 percent (31-of-55) from the field, 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the charity stripe. Post held a 31-21 edge on the boards and a 16-2 edge in second chance points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, January 18th when they host Daemen at 5 p.m.
