DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2019) – Despite a team-high 14 points from both sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered a 72-47 setback to ECC foe Daemen College on Friday night at the Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (3-13, 0-6 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Wildcats (7-8, 4-2 ECC) have won three straight games.
Brown added a team-high-tying five rebounds and Bender recorded two rebounds. Junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) scored nine points and senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) had five points.
Daemen was led by Erin Egan who poured in a game-high 19 points.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead before a Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) jumper made it a one-point game, 5-4, with 6:40 left in the opening quarter. Daemen went on to close the quarter out on a 9-1 run to take a 14-5 lead after the first quarter.
The visitors opened the second quarter on a 15-7 run to take a 17-point lead, 29-12, with 6:05 remaining in the half. Daemen held a 34-17 lead with 2:19 on the clock before the Mavericks went on a 5-0 run to close out the half to make it 34-22 at halftime.
Daemen began the third quarter on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 19, 41-22, with eight minutes left in the period. The Wildcats later put the lead to 52-29 with 3:12 on the clock and headed into the fourth quarter up, 56-37.
The Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 16-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Mercy shot 30.4 percent (14-of-46) from the floor, 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from downtown and 60.0 percent (18-of-30) from the foul line. Daemen shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 47-23 edge on the boards and a 21-5 advantage in second chance points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, January 20th when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
