Hall Records Double-Double as Women's Basketball Hosts Roberts Wesleyan

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 20, 2019) – Despite a double-double from junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 70-53 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday morning at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (3-14, 0-7 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Redhawks (8-9, 4-3 ECC) move over .500 in ECC action.

Hall finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) netted ten points. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) recorded eight points and a team-high six assists.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Emily Miller who had a game-high 23 points.

Mercy got off to a good start taking an 8-2 lead after an Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) three-pointer at the 8:09 mark of the first quarter. The Redhawks answered back with a 16-0 run to take an 18-8 lead with 2:57 left in the first quarter. The Mavericks battled back and cut the deficit to seven, 22-15, after the first quarter following a Bender layup at the buzzer.

The visitors started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to increase the lead to 13, 30-17, with 5:38 remaining in the half. Mercy responded with a 4-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws from Hall, that made it 30-21 with 4:10 on the clock and the Mavericks headed into halftime down, 32-23.

The Mavericks opened the third quarter by cutting the deficit to seven, 38-31, on a Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) jumper at the 7:14 mark. Roberts Wesleyan ensued with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to build the lead to 17, 50-33. A pair of free throws by Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) sent Mercy into the fourth quarter down, 52-37.

The Redhawks outscored the Mavericks 18-16 in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.

Mercy shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the floor, 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from downtown and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from beyond the arc and 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the charity stripe. Roberts Wesleyan held a 37-32 edge on the glass and a 22-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 23rd when they play at NYIT at 5 p.m.
