DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2019) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute from senior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the No. 11 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-1-1) have won three games in a row and continue their best start since 1989. Mercy also reaches double-digit wins for the third straight year, while the Dolphins (6-5-1) have dropped two games in a row.
Mangada scored his sixth goal of the season and freshman Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim) recorded his first collegiate assist. Junior Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Staten Island was led by Carlos Montesinos who had a team-high four shots. Jake Foeldes made four saves to take the loss.
The teams traded shots on goal in the first nine minutes of action and senior Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) forced Foeldes to make a save in the 21st minute. The Dolphins had their best chance to score in the 38th minute when Williams made a stop on a Wilson Quintero shot and sophomore Aaron Denk-Gracia (Mannheim, Germany/Liselotte-Gymnasium Mannheim) kept a shot out of the net on an ensuing rebound.
The score remained 0-0 at halftime with Mercy holding a 9-7 edge in shots.
The second half saw Williams make a save in the 48th minute to keep the game scoreless. The score remained 0-0 until the 63rd minute when Kuhn sent a cross from right to left and Mangada fired a shot past Foeldes to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The Mercy backline would not allow a shot on goal the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.
Mercy held a 16-10 edge in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 16th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
